Music for a Sunday Evening in the Park
The 2008 season ended with a performance by two of its most popular bands, Wally West's Little Big Band and Martha and The Mood Swingers on the lawn at Blandwood Mansion. This year they will reprise that lineup on Sunday June 7th at 6:00 pm in Center City Park for the opening of the 2009 season of Music For A Sunday Evening In The Park, a Greensboro tradition for 30 years.
The MUSEP summer concert series continues to be one of the golden treasures that makes Greensboro such a great place to live and work and that really sets it apart from other communities. It has been a weekly gathering of friends and neighbors to share picnic dinners and enjoy the best native Greensboro musical talent.
Jennifer Hance, Greensboro City Arts Director for the Music Center, just released the lineup for this years series and it includes many favorites from years past plus some new talent. In addition to Wally and Martha at the first concert, 19 other local groups will fill the air with music for the 13 scheduled weekly events throughout the summer. A complete schedule for the new season can be found at the official MUSEP website at www.musep.com
MUSEP began as a City funded outreach project of the Parks and Recreation Department and when City Arts had its budget cut in half a number of years ago, MUSEP became completely unfunded. Recognizing the the value of this program to Greensboro, The Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro generously stepped in the keep the series alive.
But as with all the wonderful work that the Foundation does for our community, their contribution was provided only as a stop gap measure so that a suitable permanent funding solution could be arranged. No one stepped up to the challenge. They continued to keep it alive, however, last year they cut their funding for the series in half restructuring their donation as a one to one matching fund up to half the cost of the festival. That means that when Jennifer walks the festival each week with the donation bucket your contributions are vital to the continuation of the series.
As all of our regular concert goers should know, last years weather forced the cancelation of a record four consecutive weeks of shows and along with it four weeks of lost revenue. Your contributions are critical to the continuation and success of the series. So please help out! Click the link below for details on how to donate.

Upward Sound
This is what the Phoenix system from Electro-Voice was born to do. It was created specifically as a high SPL loudspeaker system with tons of sonic headroom for regional sound companies where an X-Array rig is too much and a Qrx rig is not enough. Owner Poa Ly of Upward Sound in Connelly Springs, NC just picked up his new 3 over 2 Phoenix sound system from CareySound. We are pleased to have Poa join us in providing quality audio from BOSCH. In addtion to his new Phoenix boxes he also has a MIDAS Venice, EV monitors, Klark Teknik SquareONE Graphics and Dynamics. Click here for more details on the Phoenix system.
Make sure to call him when you need audio in Western NC. He can be reached at (828) 448-0534.

Standing Room Only
With over 3,000 in
attendance, it was standing room only at Mt. Zion
Baptist Church in Greensboro, NC tonight for a city
wide celebration of Martin Luther King Day. The
service held tonight was the culmination of a full
day of community activities celebrating Dr. Kings
life.
The power-packed event featured special guest
artists Phillip Bryant, Lil' Mo and multiple 2008
Stellar Award winner, Dewayne Woods backed by a one
hundred member community mass choir. Dr. John Guns
of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in
Jacksonville, Florida was the featured guest
speaker.
The event also marked the debut of Mt. Zion's new
sound system to the community at large. The sound
system was designed and installed by local systems
integrator CareySound. Company owner, Ken Carey,
along with Tommy Martin, VP of Sales and John
Carey, HE, were on hand to handle the engineering
duties for the evening.
System designer, Ken Carey of CareySound and Stuart Schatz of BOSCH Communications faced several challenges in designing the new system. "The 10 year old sound system we just replaced had never really addressed some very serious issues in the room" Carey said. "This sanctuary is not only very wide but is was built completely backward to the way auditoriums are built with the tall part of the room in the front and the short part of the room in the rear end with a balcony. This arrangement effectively funnels all of the sound down into the back rows and presented many more reflective surfaces in the process. This was in addition to a very loud HVAC system" Carey explained.
The original system consisted of a very large, tightly packed, Left-Center-Right trapezoidal speaker system with overlapping conical horn coverage. Additionally, multiple smaller cabinets had been added to the space to try to compensate for the very patchy sound distribution in the auditorium. "With the seat-to-seat variations in coverage and the loud HVAC system they were driving the system hard to try to cover the imperfections in sound distribution in the auditorium and the high sound levels very quickly swamped the room adding to the already complicated acoustics of the space," continued Carey.
The solution to this unique combination of issues was the installation of a precisely focusable Electro-Voice Xlci loudspeaker line-array. Dual 13-element Line Arrays, each consisting of eight Xlci127DVX boxes hung under four Xlci215 subs, flank the stage powered by eight Electro-Voice P3000RL remote supervised Precision Series Amplifiers. "Utilizing the great sounding, high performance, Xlci loudspeaker system with the aid of EV's powerful LAPS computer aided aiming software, we were able to design a verifiably accurate system with complete confidence. All of the issues created by the original 32 box, 29 amplifier system along with the oddly shaped room and loud HVAC system were overcome with the new system. Everybody in the sold out auditorium tonight had the best seat in the house." Carey concluded.
In addition to the new EV house system at Mt. Zion are new monitor speakers utilizing the new Dynacord VariLine loudspeakers. The new wireless microphone system is the EV REV UHF System with RE-410 mic capsules.
Celebrating it's 30th year in business, CareySound takes great pride in offering it's clients the highest degree of expertise and customer service in both sales and specialty audio production services. For more details please contact us by phone at (336) 379-1943 or by email at ken@careysound.com.

Tommy's Definitely Not Gone Fishing
Even though I hear that the fishing is great in Minnesota there will be none of that for Tommy who is attending the BOSCH Communications Systems Academy for the week getting his IrisNet/NetMax certification. BOSCH provides these intensive training sessions throughout the year at it's corporate headquarters in Burnsville, MN. CareySound continually trains so you don't have too.
From the introduction of the first IRIS (Intelligent Remote Integrated Supervision) software platform for amplifiers in 2002, EV has been developing a robust audio control protocol and new innovative audio hardware. The first was the RL line of remote controlled amplifier products. These amplifiers offered an amazing level of user control and monitoring, which brought reliability and ease of use to a wide range of users. Now EV is introducing the NetMax™ N8000, a comprehensive digital audio system controller — the next link in the IRIS-Net audio processing chain. IRIS-Net is EV’s answer to the ever-increasing complexity of audio system designs. It is a comprehensive software platform, which encompasses a huge array of control options. All aspects of the audio chain are under its supervision and control. The key areas of signal processing, supervision and signal routing are all manipulated under its shell.
The new NetMax N8000 is the central player in the IRIS-Net solution. It offers an extremely flexible hardware platform that allows for field level customization of the unit to nearly any application. This customization goes far beyond what is available today from other platforms. Everything from the matrix size and configuration to the processing power can be customized in the field, making it easy to design the best solution value for the customer.
Distributed vs. Central processing – The N8000 and IRIS-Net gives you both!
Now you don’t have to make the choice as to where your processing power resides. IRIS-Net gives you the ability to choose BOTH! IRIS-Net enables you to process all or part of the audio signal in a central component like the NetMax N8000 or to conduct the processing and supervision remotely at the amplifier. This gives the system designer incredible flexibility in designing the system. You can now design the system for the ultimate in reliability or design for efficiency and value. The IRIS-Net solution gives you all the hardware and software pieces to accomplish both objectives.
Open Architecture – Extensively Tested
The IRIS-Net software platform has been extensively tested in a variety of venues. Even prior to its introduction the system hardware and software underwent extensive testing and scrutiny. The software interface and hardware component design were made with the user and designer in mind. The open architecture of the hardware and IRIS-Net user protocol allow for the seamless functioning of external devices within IRIS-Net and its hardware components.

Alive With The Sound Of Music
It's that time of year again. The annual Music for a Sunday Evening in the Park (MUSEP) summer concert series began this last Sunday in Center City Park. O.K. so that's not entirely true. As seems to be a growing trend, every time Allison King is scheduled to perform in the new park it rains and this past Sunday was no exception. But have faith, MUSEP will return again next Sunday continuing to wind it's way around Greensboro parks throughout the rest of the summer bringing beautiful music to the faithful. As always CareySound will be there to make sure you can hear every note.
A complete schedule of concerts and directions to all of the parks can be found at the official MUSEP.INFO website that is maintained and sponsored by Twistedsun.net and CareySound.com by CLICKING HERE.

Country In The Country
In the North Carolina mountains, against the backdrop of lush gardens, marble statues and the palatial estate that is The Biltmore, the soulful music of country superstar John Anderson filled the unseasonably cool night air. The private event was held on the terrace next to the mansion. Once again the Dynacord Cobra System proved to be the perfect audio solution for what can be a tricky acoustical environment. The 60' by 120' tent used for the event posed no contest for CareySound Productions Cobra System.

Smokin' Signal
The opening event for Signal Southeast Electronic Music Festival started with a bang tonight in Chapel Hill in the Great Hall on the campus of UNC-ChapelHill. The legendary Derrick May was tonight's featured performer. Derrick, one of the Belleville Three from Detroit, is credited with developing the futuristic variation on house music called "techno".
You will find CareySound with an exclusive assortment of Dynacord and Electro-Voice gear throughout all of the festival venues as it continues through the weekend. A complete schedule can be found by clicking here.
'D-LITE' ful
It was a beautiful day Tuesday for UNCG's rescheduled Earth Day Celebration an once again CareySound was there to provide the sound. The amazing Dynacord D-LITE 2000 System was the centerpiece of the system we provided along with other Dynacord and Electro-Voice gear. The D-LITE system is very sophisticated compact high performance satellite system. It is on loan to us for use on one of the venues at SignalFest in Chapel Hill this weekend and John couldn't wait to take it out for a spin.
CareySound Flies With The Big Birds
In a first for the air show, a concert, featuring pilot, longtime air enthusiast and national country star Arron Tippin was held at the heart of the flight line and outdoor display aircraft area. CareySound of Greensboro provided the staging, lights, and audio for the concert.

Rain In, Rain Out
Greensboro experienced no exception to the bad weather that plagued the east coat this weekend. We set up for the Allison King Band concert between rain outbursts and packed up several hours later in the rain with threats of tornado's without even one note being played. This concert, part of the Center Center Live events scheduled for Center City Park this week, was originally scheduled as the last concert of the 2006 MUSEP Concert Series but was postponed because of construction delays. It was shame that nobody got the hear Allison and her band yet again in the new park. Maybe next time. They would have sounded fantastic through our Cobra system.
I Didn't See You There
Center City Live Series began on Saturday. The day of activities started with Grimsley High School's Blue Steel drumline, continued with the Pink Flamingos (shown above), and finished with the Nutbush Ramblers. The weather was great and the meager crowd (however small) was enthusiastic. As part of CareySound's partnering with Grassroots Productions (the event coordinators for the park) we were there providing sound for the event. A significant part of the proceeds that CareySound collects providing production at the park is returned directly to the park to help with it's operation and upkeep.
This is just the first in a week long series of events being sponsored by the park so be sure to show your support by making time to attend the remaining activities. You can find a complete schedule of events by clicking here.

It May Have Been Cold On The Outside…
And ok, it was cold inside too, but the music was hot.
I told you McCouls was going to have the hottest St. Patrick's Day party. John and I had a great time (as did several thousand party goers). Sorry to here that the News and Record didn't get free ticket's to the party. I guess that means this is a CareySound.com News EXCLUSIVE.
Looking For Something To Do?
Here are a couple of suggestions for a place to go on St. Patrick's Day.
This may look like nothing more than a parking lot right now, but on Saturday, this spot, at the corner of Elm St. and McGee in downtown Greensboro, McCoul's Public House will one again hold their annual St. Patrick's Day Festival. CareySound will also be their again to help with the audio chores. Don't forget to stop by the sound board and say hi to John and I.
The street party begins at 11 am and goes to midnight. This years lineup of bands includes:
Mulligan's Banned
Matt Hill Blues Band
Irish Dancers with CD music on stage
The Holy Ghost Tent Revival
Bagpipes on stage
Molly McGinn
Limerick Competition
Urban Sophisticates
Evan Olson & Walrus

Let It Rain, Let It Rain, Let It Rain
Nothing was going to stop the rescheduled ribbon cutting ceremonies of the new City Center Park in Greensboro on Friday. Not years of planning, construction delays or unseasonable December rain storms. As if on cue, the rain stopped and the clouds parted as several hundred Greensboro citizens participated in the ribbon cutting ceremonies.CareySound was there for the groundbreaking two years ago and was there again for the opening ceremonies. The CareySound Cobra System provided the audio system on stage while 14 delayed EV Sx300's ringed the park.
You will just have to take our word on how gorgeous the park is because the SoundMan was the first victim of the new park when his camera was stolen and all of his pictures of the event disappeared along with the camera.
A little friendly advice from the SoundMan. Don't let his experience there discourage you from enjoying the park, just don't take valuables with you as you watch the new fountain. If the thief is reading this, please at least have the dignity to at least give us a copy of the pictures on the camera.
Sellout in Fletcher
Christian comedian Chonda Pierce preformed to an enthusiastic sellout crowd last Thursday night in Fletcher, NC at the Lelia Patterson Center in a benefit concert for Park Ridge Hospital. The CareySound Cobra System was on hand to make sure that every joke and song was heard by the 1,400 people in the audience. John Carey was the SoundMan for the event.

Joanna Newsom should need no intrduction. She took the world by storm in 2004 for her award winning album "The Milk-Eyed Mender". Her childlike voice and angelic harp playing is unlike anything out there today. Her new album "Ys" will be released on November 14th and will feature a full orchestrated band. This performance will feature a 7 person orchestra and should be an intimate night of gorgeous music. The opening act will be classical guitarist Sir Richard Bishop!
Also Performing Tonight will be the CareySound Cobra System with John at the helm. Make sure you stop and say hi (and don't forget to tip the soundman).
Smaarter Now
Today was master class day at CareySound. We covered the difference in various audio measurement tools, their usefulness, their limitations, their application to live audio and Smaart Live software basics. We are planning a series of audio classes in the following months and we would love to get an idea of how much interest there would be for such a series and what topics and at what experience level they should be. PLEASE contact us and let us know if you are interested.

Breakfast At Tiffiny's?
Smoke & Fire
For those of you that
don't already know, CareySound team member and
SoundMan's progeny, John, has his own website,
twistedsun.net. What began over five years
ago as an outlet for his creative (non-audio)
musings quickly became a popular site for
desktop pictures (that's wallpaper for you pc
types) and his online photography portfolio.
Many of his photo's have graced this site as
well. Well, it seems that the lure of music and
live audio has taken over more of his life and
his web site relects this change.
Sprinkled throughout his sprawling site are more
and more audio ramblings, the latest of which
can be found by clicking
here. It's seems that a traveling studio
engineer posing as a live soundguy and the it's
'good enough for rock-n-roll' sound gear
flooding the audio marketplace have fired him up
on this post. It's well worth a click and even
the old SoundMan himself has gotten into the
action in the comments section of the post.
Needless to say dad's very proud of his offspring,
but this recommendation to add this site to your
bookmarks is more than just an old SoundMan
bragging about his kids. Think of this as a
realtime journal of a budding new SoundMan's
experiences (and the pictures are not bad to look
at either).

SoundMan Spotted At Seafood Festival
SoundMan made himself at home in style this year in his official SoundMan traveling abode.
The weather provided some added excitement this year when a thunder storm accompanied high tide and flooded a large portion of the event site on Sunday morning. The water was so high at the docks that they almost had to cancel the Blessing Of The Fleet ceremony. Even SoundMan's Cruiser was not spared from the flood. Next year he said he was bringing a boat.
The only regret he had was that he slept trough it and didn't get any pictures of his home surrounded by water.
It Was Back To Winston-Salem Again on Saturday.
The 15th Annual FIESTA Street Festival brought us back to familiar territory this last weekend. CareySound, in partnership with Sterling Audio Visual, provided a Dynacord Cobra system for the main stage on 4th Street.
Not content with just being another pretty face, Sterling AV co-owner, Robert Smith shows us his MIDAS mixing chops.
Even though we couldn't pronounce the names of all these acoustic instruments, if it made a sound we put a mic on it and made it beautifully louder.

More than a summer concert season will end this year at the October concert. The director of the series, Lynn Donovan, is retiring this year after 30 years of service to the City of Greensboro and 16 years with the MUSEP program. She will be greatly missed. The continued success and even the existence of the MUSEP series is a testiment to her hard work. So remember to tell her thanks at the next concert. Lynn, her husband Dan and two of their three dogs are pictured below at last weeks show. We wish her well.

It could not have been a more punishing test under more severe conditions even if it had been at a summer outdoor rock concert at high noon in a dusty field in the heart of the south. The participants all went home happy and all of the gear performed flawlessly the entire night with NO DAMAGE.
Call us Now to discover Dynacord's secret weapon for survival and insist that all your gear is protected with this ingenious feat of engineering.

It's Now Officially Summer
The return of Music for a Sunday Evening in the Park (MUSEP) heralds the official start of summer in Greensboro once again. Even the rain last Sunday evening could not dampen the enthusiasm for the new season of free weekly concerts hosted in various parks thorough the city by the Music Center, City Arts of the Greensboro City Parks and Recreation Department.
A couple of years ago the city cut funding for the sumer series and the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro took over the financial responsibilities allowing the over 20 year old program to continue. Considering the series to be a valuable community resource the Foundation combined it with another annual city concert series, The Barber Park Series, and expanded the experience by providing additional resources to allow adding a second performing group to most of the concert dates. This years MUSEP series now covers 17 Sundays with 25 different musical groups.
CareySound has been providing audio production for the event for most of its history and proudly continues that tradition again this year. The series presents a demanding audio challenge. Audience sizes vary between 2 to 8 thousand and ages range from toddles to retirees. The musical groups cover every thing from large 60 piece concert bands and symphony orchestras to jazz trios and folk. All of this diversity requires a great deal of flexability in an audio system. Three years ago we discovered the perfect audio solution in the Dynacord Cobra portable line array system. Stop by any Sunday and we will gladly give you a tour of the system and more insight into the production.
The next MUSEP concert is this Sunday, June 4th, at Foust Park behind Aycock Auditorium on the campus of UNC-Greensboro and begins promptly at 6:00 PM with the jazz stylings of the Dave Fox Group and is followed at 7:15 PM by the group FourForOne. Bring your friends, neighbors and family along with a blanket & picnic dinner and join us. It's the perfect way to spend an evening in the park and it's free. By clicking here you can find the complete schedule at the official MUSEP web site.

Up, Up, and Away
Dancing The Night Away
In Greensboro the Regency Room was the host to the Afro-Cuban sounds of BioRitmo as part of the Piedmont Jazz and Blues Festival series coordinated by the Eastern Music Festival. The rental departments EV Qrx system with a MIDAS Venice provided the audio for the event with none other than Ken Carey at the controls.
And keeping it all in the family across the other side of the state John Carey took the night off from his new job at the Flying Anvil to engineer for The North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra.
Founded in early 1993, by James Ketch and Gregg Gelb, The North Carolina Jazz Repertory Orchestra has already established a name for itself as one of the great jazz repertory orchestras now playing. The audio magic for that event was CareySound's Dynacord Cobra system.
PJBF and a glass of milk please.
Spring once again welcomes the Piedmont Jazz & Blues Festival to downtown Greensboro. This years festivities began last Saturday with Professor Jazz performing at the Renaissance Jazz Café and continued tonight with Gypsy Jazz II at Solaris Tapas and The PJBF Benefit at Greensboro's newest downtown night spot the Flying Anvil.
Small town charm, big city music. Greensboro's celebration of jazz & blues.
The annual event is a collection of independently produced concerts coordinated by the Eastern Music Festival. You can find the festival schedule of events by clicking here.
Pete, Brian and Andrew, partners in the Flying Anvil, are great guys with a great vision and deserve your support.
At The Carnival
From now thru Sunday you will find CareySound at the GYC Carnival. Now in its 42nd year, the carnival provides a unique community experience for Greensboro's youth. This annual family event is planed and implemented by the Greensboro Youth Council providing leadership and volunteer opportunities for more than 200 Guilford County High School students. We invite you to join us at the carnival and share in the fun.

It Took A Lick'n
The event was held in five different venues throughout the Chapel Hill community. John Carey (he comes by his 'pedal to the metal' mixing technique honestly) engineered the performances at the Nightlight venue with a modified version of our Club 300 rental system. The system featured the EV Zx5 fullrange loudspeakers with EV Qrx 118 subs on mains and EV Zx1's for monitors all powered with EV CP3000S amplifiers. As for the performance of the system for the two day torture-fest, let's just say, well be back again next year - by popular demand!

Working Hard For The Money
Later in the evening the whole band preformed to a large crowd at War Memorial Auditorium in the Greensboro Coliseum Complex for a concert sponsored by the Campus Activity Board of UNC-Greensboro. They were joined by a great opening act by the name of MuteMath.

Collaboration
Wake Forest University's Student Union in Winston-Salem will play host to Ben Folds at Wait Chapel on Wednesday evening March 29th at 8:00 PM. CareySound has a long history with Ben. We met him in late 80's when he rented equipment for his band Majòsha. He was the first customer to rent from us that paid for the horn diaphragms they took out during their show.
It's been a year since we worked with him at Davidson College and are looking forward to working with him again on Wednesday. Tickets are available to the pubic for $25.
WUAG Presents
Once again CareySound shows it's support for WUAG Radio's WUAG Presents Series. This show was held in the Faculty Center on the UNC Greensboro campus. Man Man and The Drift were the featured bands.
Mic A Bedpan?
Sure, I'll be right there! I've got the perfect microphone for it. Earthworks to the rescue.
The Closing Night Event caped four days of 77 screenings. Following the award ceremony was the featured screening of Douglas Fairbanks 1927 silent film, The Black Pirate (the first film to use Technicolor) accompanied by the world renown Alloy Orchestra. Bedpan, flute, synthesizer, accordion, metal tubes & sheets, clarinet and percussion... count me in. Audio doesn't get much more exiting than this.
The Dynacord Cobra system provided the foundation for the audio with MIDAS and KT providing the console and system EQ.
It's All Happening In Hamburger Square
We will also be across the street at Natty Green's with a celtic band. A Club 300 System from our rental department will provide the sound. We'll see you downtown. Make sure to come up and say hi.

December Begins With A Bang
Then on Saturday the University of North Carolina at Greensboro's college's student radio station, WUAG, presented their 3rd annual high energy fashion show 'Style in Stereo' in Cone Ballroom. Over 540 people attended the sold out event and listened to the musical stylings of The Never, Tiger Bear Wolf, The Illuninati and Psyche Origami. The Dynacord Cobra system was hard at work providing the muscle for the hard driving sounds of the night. Also on the scene was the new Electro-Voice Blue Series Cardinal vocal microphones and the new Zx1 loudspeakers for monitors. This event was part of 'WUAG Presents', an ongoing series of concerts presented by the station. For over two years, CareySound is proud to be an ongoing sponsor of this series.
