Digital Solutions

Digital systems are dramatically changing the installed audio landscape. The scales have tipped in the cost/ benefit ratio in favor of deploying digital solutions as compared to their analogue predecessors. These two system upgrades that CareySound has just completed at Calvary Christian Center and Providence Baptist Church provide a two great examples of the advantages of digital workflows.

FCC ADOPTS ORDER TO CLEAR THE 700 MHZ FREQUENCY FOR PUBLIC
SAFETY AND NEXT GENERATION CONSUMER USERS

Washington, D.C. – Today the Federal Communications Commission adopted an Order and
Further Notice of Proposed Rulemaking prohibiting the further distribution and sale of devices
that operate in the 700 MHz frequency. This action helps complete an important component of
the DTV Transition by clearing the 700 MHz band to enable the rollout of communications
services for public safety and the deployment of next generation 4G wireless devices for
consumers.

The order will primarily impact the use of
wireless microphone systems that currently
operate in the 700 MHz band
. These unlicensed devices cannot continue to operate in this band
because they may cause harmful interference to public safety entities and next generation
consumers devices that will be utilizing the 700 MHz frequency. Thus, the Commission is
making clear that
no devices utilizing this frequency may be sold or distributed. In order to
ensure that individuals and groups currently using unauthorized devices in this band have ample
time to transition to appropriate frequencies, the FCC is providing a sunset period until June 12,
2010
, one year from the DTV Transition.

The Commission is also unveiling an aggressive consumer outreach plan in order to assist
consumers who have previously purchased wireless microphone systems and other related
devices that utilized the 700 MHz band. Through the Commission’s website,
www.fcc.gov/cgb/wirelessmicrophones, consumers can learn whether their wireless device is
currently operating in the prohibited band and whether their devices may be retuned to operate
on another band. Consumers may also call 1-800-CALL-FCC to ask questions regarding this
transition.

The findings in the Order will be effective upon release of the item. Action by the
Commission, January 14, 2010, by Order. Chairman Genachowski, Commissioners Copps,
McDowell, Clyburn, and Baker. Chairman Genachowski issuing a statement. Docket No. WT
08-166.

Rental Update

rent1:2off
The rental SALE we have been running since August of last year has been one of our most popular promotions. It was created in response to the state of our economy to help our customers coop in these tough financial times. We were hoping that things would have improved by now but the hard times continue to plague all of us so we have been reevaluating our rental department operations.

To permanently lower our rates we have several factors we have to consider. First is the quality of the equipment we offer. Throughout the history of our rental department we have exclusively offered premium professional gear and that decision comes at a high price. One of the things we are looking at carefully is the total cost of ownership over the life of the product. Is the higher cost of the gear compensated by lower upkeep costs and we are exploring alternatives that still offer a high quality of performance with less costs.

Secondly is the cost of delivery of the service. We have to pay for the cost of the space to store the inventory when it is not being rented and we have to cover the labor costs involved in preparing and maintaining the gear. One of the innovations that we introduced in the last few months is to move as much of the rental procedure as possible to our website and the results have been very encouraging. We are in the process of making infrastructure improvements to improve that experience. We have also added new diagnostic equipment to our shop so we can improve our maintenance of the gear to increase our ability to preempt problems before they create equipment failure and down time.

So while we are sorting all of this out we have decided to extend the sale a a little longer. Our 1/2 off rental prices will continue. Please help us spread the word. The more people we have taking advantage of these lower prices the longer we can continue the sale.

SoundMan Joins The Green Revolution

ZZ23EFA317

Dear SoundMan - I live in Nashville a short drive away from Al Gores mansion. I passed it last night and the place was all lit up. I swear you can hear the power meter whirring in protest just by rolling your windows down. Here’s my problem. I’ve got a gig this next weekend and I’m afraid that Al is hogging all the power and there won’t be enough for my guitar amp. I can’t afford to cancel the gig, I haven’t worked in over 6 months, and I don’t have an acoustic guitar to play. Is there any way to round up enough AC so I don’t starve to death? Sincerely - The Starving Artist

Dear Starving Artist -

Sorry to hear that you play an electric guitar that you’re out of work. Now if you were a soundman like me instead of a guitar player you’d know this old SoundMan trick.

The average dynamic microphone (it’s that thing you try to sing into that’s sitting in front of your face) modulated at an average speaking level produces about 7.4 mV of alternating current [1] and there are somewhere around 2 billion (that’s billion with a B) microphones manufactured each year [2]. (Hell, SoundMan even have a few million or so hanging around in his closet.) So plug up about a half a years worth and hum at 60 Hz. Nothing to it.

Relay For Life - TV Style

CareySound joined in the activities a couple of weeks ago at Central Davidson High School in Lexington for the Relay For Life walk arranged to honor Tricia Creasey where it was reveled that her and her family had been chosen for ABCs Extreme Makeover Home Editions latest project.

The show must go on - with 40 degree temperatures, 20 mph winds and driving rain courtesy of Hurricane Ida relay organizers decided go ahead with the event an volunteers and participants weathered the poor conditions. About three in the afternoon the ABC production crew showed up and turned the event into a video shoot until dark. It was like being in a movie and we were all extras.

Neither wind nor rain prevented CareySounds Cobra System for working flawlessly for the 24 hours of the event.
