The CareySound Difference

IMG_0701

Sometimes the most important choice to make is not what to buy but who to buy it from. CareySound installed a system upgrade back in December of last year at Fayetteville St. Baptist Church in Asheboro that included a new MIDAS Venice mixing console and Aaron Cranford, who is regional manager for Peak Tech-nologies and in charge of audio at the church, puts it this way…

"It was a pleasure working with you guys upgrading our system, and we really love our Midas. Over the past few years we had experienced much lesser quality consoles which contributed to many sound deficiencies throughout our auditorium. Some of the church's past music directors had received information and suggestions from other "so-called" sound engineering companies, who obviously didn't really know much about sound equipment, or was just out to make a dollar, and made decisions without checking the quality of the company, much less the quality of the equipment. I am not a music director but I have been around sound reinforcement equipment for many years, it's a hobby and something I enjoy doing. Therefore, I will go around to companies and check out the equipment they sell and how technical their people are.  Carey Sound has been at the top of my list since I first came into your store some 4 or 5 years ago. When I saw that you represented the Midas Consoles and EV equipment, I knew that at least you carried some of the finest equipment on the market.  But then after talking with some of your folks who work for you, I knew then that Carey Sound had the best quality in equipment and personnel."

"Back in September the Deacons of the Church came to me and asked if I would take over the sound and try to correct it.  I pretty much knew what it needed but I came to your shop and talked with Tommy. Tommy came to our Church and we went from one end to the other. Tommy agreed with me but he also pointed out some things that I wasn't aware of that worked out much better, which is why it's nice to work with folks who know what they're doing. Tommy put a quote together, I presented it to the Deacons, who brought it before the Church and a unanimous decision was made to go ahead with the project.   I have received many compliments now of how much better it sounds within our auditorium.  Everything is working and sounding great. The Midas Console is just outstanding.  The sound from it alone is enough to justify it, but the ease of operation is an added luxury that speaks volumes for this piece of equipment. The Sennheiser wireless and EV podium mics sound very clean and professional and the EV floor monitors produce really great quality sound as well. And knowing that we now have a Whirlwind Medusa Snake Cable for all the signals to flow throw removes the fear of RF interference."

"So thanks, Ken, for having the professional people and equipment that takes the worry out of sound engineering."

Some jobs are a little more interesting than others. Brown's Chapel Missionary Baptist is one of those more interesting installations.

Pastor Pinnix and his son represent two of seven generations of Pinnix's to worship and serve at this this vibrant country church near Burlington. The sanctuary was built by parishioners over 87 years ago. CareySound, who has been serving as their audio company for the last 12 years, is pleased to continue that generational tradition as Ken Carey, along with his oldest son John Carey, work together with them on the latest expansion of their sound system.

We had such a good time last year…

Picture 1

A year ago, a spirit of passion towards electronic music led a small group of North Carolina DJs and musicians to put their heads together and organize the first ever Signal - The Southeast Electronic Music Festival. They decided Chapel Hill would be an ideal location and the event was held in multiple venues throughout for two days in April. They assembled a lineup featuring internationally renowned artists such as Jason Forrest (Berlin, Germany), Deepsky (Hollywood, CA), Noel Sanger (Charlottesville, VA), and Buckner (Orlando, FL), as well as many regionally and locally known performers including A Drop In Silence (John Carey and Matt ) from right here at CareySound who took one of our systems with them.

The success of that event engergized the group to produce this years encore and for CareySound to become one its sponsors. Working closely with the College Union Activties Board of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, this year promises to be even bigger and better and will feature even more venues and workshops with the opening night on the UNC campus.

Dear SoundMan - I 'm curious about the output levels on the DSP 244 in the Cobra System. Should they be set at the detent { -6 db} or should they be all the way up? Will the system run safely if they are all the way up? - Thanks, Snake Charmer

Dear Snake Charmer,

That's a great question that brings up a very important topic when running a sound system. Here is the response that Hans Bürger, who is the product manager for Dynacord in Germany, gave to that question a while back:

"It's a question of setting the gain structure and how that effects the limiters inside the DSP. In comparison with other manufacturers - without passive safety-circuits inside the speaker - the limiter setting is not so critical for Cobra due to the internal voice coil tracking protection. However it is critical considering the headroom and limiting of the DSP. One example... Consider a 4 way system. If you have all the DSP outputs set at full and would like more of one particular band pass, you would then have to turn down the other 3 bands."

"You can safely run with the output levels set full. However, you then are in danger of limiting for the amp and the speaker. Generally, it would be wise to leave the outputs at -6, depending on the application, operator etc... If you are confident in the operator, you can run full open. However, if the operator is not capable of understanding the system, they could run into limit and not realize it. This can make for bad sound and possible failure!

"In all my demo-systems I open the output levels of my DSP´s without limiter changing. I never have problems. In our amplifier is a internal "analog" limiter and this only allows an output signal with max 1% distortion. The max input in the amplifier before clipping of the pre-amps is 21 dBu !!!"

That's great advice for sound systems in general. If you ever go to the audio for operators seminar given by Pat Brown of Synaudcom (and you should if you aspire to be all that you can be), that's the first topic he discusses. You hardly ever hear the local sound guru discussing such things when he's rappin' db's to impress the locals where head room is the empty space underneath his hat and gain structure is his game plan for getting rich in sound biz. That insight should help to explain why there is still so much bad audio even though we have so many cool new tools.

The Future Begins Now

Twenty-nine years ago, with a table saw bought from Sears on credit in my back yard, I began the journey that is CareySound. This story began with CareySound being a sound company when it was still a something of a novelty in the business world, providing PA systems for local bands and nightclubs. And as with most long journeys it's had it's share of drama along the way.

Ten years ago, most of our customers didn't even realize we had a thriving sales department, so I made the decision to split off the concert production division and took on a partner to form a new event production company. This way CareySound could concentrate on sales and rentals. The plan worked and both companies grew in prominence. Two months ago, my partner of 10 years in the production company, (now let me put this as nicely as possible) decided to follow a different path and we dissolved the business and split up the assets. Which brings me to the present.

After consultation with my oldest son John, who most of you already know, and the encouragement of many friends, team members and clients, we have decided not to abandon the path I began 29 years ago and to continue to offer the community complete event production. It's with a new sense of excitement that we announce the return of event production department to the CareySound family with this new website design.

This next year already promises to be exciting so please stay tuned. The future begins now.

Dear SoundMan - Rick Earl from PSW thinks you might have replacement foam for an old EV PL10. Do you have any or perhaps know of a source? - Thanks Hanno -

ZZ04AB7EB2
Dear Hanno,
EV has long stopped manufacturing parts for the PL 10 but I certianly can understand wanting to refurbish one I have several in my mic drawer. Nothing makes a microphone more popular than being discontinued. To answer your question, I do not have any parts for the mic.

The material that they used, not only for the pop filter but for the suspension as well, is Acoustifoam™. The closest you can get to this is made by a company called WindTech which is a division of Olsen Audio Group. They do not sell direct but it can be gotten from MCM Electronics (800-543-4300). Their model 5700 windscreen would be about the right size. Not all foam is the same and this foam is very high quality and should replace the original.
