Pet Peeve
SoundMan is peeved.
All I wanted to do is relax and watch a little TV. So, I settled into my easy chair and tuned into the season premier of Office - perfect. Great episode. Next up — a new show called Community and right in the opening scene I see this-
Ok - so here's the thing. Why does Hollywood insist on using feedback to let us know the actors are using a sound system. Next time you watch a show that includes a PA system listen to see if it don't all squeal when someone steps up to the mic. Isn't it enough of a clue they are using a microphone that a sound system is being used, do we really have to hear it howl, are we really that stupid. When you see a scene with a car you don't see a cloud of blue smoke and hear the engine backfire. When someone uses a sink as a prop they don't have it spewing water all over the place. So why does the PA have to feedback. It happens all the time. Even in serious movies.
Here is another example form the movie Accepted.
As if the feedback in this clip wasn't bad enough, they switch to the operator who is seen trying to adjust the system with a mixer that NOTHING IS PLUGED INTO, not even a power cord.
It's really sad that Hollywood can't come up with another way to portray the use of a sound system in a scene other than the use of an inept soundman.
Replaced By A $1,200 Gizmo? I Don't Think So!
Dear Bryan,
There is an old saying in my profession, 'NEVER tick-off the soundman!" Just ask Carl. It's all the way to the top for you and your invention.
I think I speak for all soundmen everywhere when I say, "I won't be retiring anytime soon."
